A Buyer's Guide To Wicker Garden Furniture

Which wicker furniture to buy

Whether you’re eating or relaxing in the garden, wicker furniture looks fab! But how do you choose designs that look good, and are made to last? We have all you need to know.

Wicker garden furniture is a hugely popular choice. It works beautifully in both contemporary or more traditional gardens, it’s easy to care for and if you buy the best quality, it will prove to be robust and durable.

Types of wicker furniture

Wicker is a woven fibre that can be made using organic or synthetic materials. For garden furniture, the synthetic version is almost invariably used because it’s weatherproof and hard-wearing. It can also be UV stabilised, which protects it from snapping or cracking when it’s exposed to the sun. You’ll find it referred to as all-weather wicker, or all-weather rattan, too.

Organic wicker furniture is also strong and durable, but it’s better used inside for example in a conservatory unless you want to carry it in from the garden after every use. Left outside, it could develop mould in damp conditions and become brittle and snap in the heat of the sun.

Synthetic wicker furniture is made from various regions of the world in varying qualities and styles. Indonesia is known for its top-quality wicker, and you’ll find it used in our garden furniture ranges often combined with beautiful recycled Teak tables to make a very distinguished look.

Pick the best wicker furniture to suit your space

Wicker furniture can enable you to transform your garden into a magical outdoor living space.

With additional complementary pieces such as sofas and armchairs, as well as a collection of coffee tables, these allow you to create your very own living room style grouping on a patio, terrace, deck or lawn.

For outdoor dining, wicker chairs are a faultless seating option for long, relaxed meals. As with indoor furniture, make sure you create enough seating for adults and children. When you’re choosing outdoor lounge furniture, look for generous three-seater sofas if you want to create space for three adults to relax in comfort.

Outdoor dining chairs should have supportive backs and deep cushions, while armrests make leisurely meals even more relaxing. You can choose from contemporary curvaceous wicker furniture designs with generous wide arms and classic pieces with slimmer armrests and neat lines.

In a large garden, either will work beautifully, but if your space is more compact, opt for neater silhouettes so you will be able to sit down and move through your space with ease. Artificial wicker also comes in beautiful natural tones as well as white finishes.

How to choose the best wicker furniture

As with most things in life, all wicker furniture is not the same. Use our insightful checklist below to ensure your purchase will look good and last long:

  1. Consider the type of wicker. Both flat and round versions are available, but round wicker is more robust and durable, while flat can fade or even snap. Not sure which type you're looking for? Reach out to us
  2. Make sure it's UV stabilised, so your furniture will last.
  3. Look at the cushions. They should be well filled so you can sit outside for as long as you would on your indoor furniture. Thinner cushions will be uncomfortable and won't last.
  4. Also, check that the cushions are UV stabilised to maintain their good looks.
  5. Go for machine-washable cushion covers, ones that can be zipped off and on, so they always look their best.
  6. Pay attention to furniture frames and make sure you are buying strong, corrosion-free aluminium as opposed to steel which will rust outdoors.

How to maintain your wicker furniture

To make life easier for yourself, simply hose down artificial wicker to clean it. Alternatively, use warm soapy water. The cushions should be stored away during bad weather and the winter months.

Eco Credentials

Some darker coloured artificial wicker furniture is made with recycled plastics and doesn't contain the necessary amounts of UV stabiliser to help protect the wicker in the sunshine. This can result in inferior quality and furniture that doesn’t last. Thin, black, and flat wicker is often a tell-tale sign.

The materials we use are chosen because they are woven around designs that last and that you’ll love for many years to come! All the plastics are made from polyethylene which is 100% recyclable having a minimal environmental footprint.
