Herringbone options to suit your style

Wooden parquet floors have always been a sign of good quality flooring, synonymous with luxury, with many intricate design options to choose from. Composed of individual wooden blocks arranged in geometric patterns, the pieces are professionally laid by hand, one piece at a time. The benefits are that it is hard-wearing, as well as beautiful, with optically diverse patterns. It’s an expensive option, however, nowadays with modern parquet flooring, laminate options are more affordable. As well as wood veneer, which appears to look like solid wood.

Parquet is often seen in various inlay patterns, similar to decorative wood marquetry on furniture. And the optical effects of the various installation directions give special illusions. If laid transversely, against the long side of a room, the room will feel wider. Whereas, laying parquet parallel to the long side of a room, gives the illusion of longer floor space.

The herringbone pattern is a traditional and popular design choice more commonly used on floors. Whereby rectangular pieces are precision cut, and then staggered as they are laid, to meet the side of another, at right angles, in an overlapping zig-zag formation. Whereas chevron style pieces (an alternative option) have a continuous straightforward zig-zag pattern, in an uninterrupted fashion.

Wood also plays a part in the overall optical effect, using different woods for character, colours, and tones. E.g., from light and dark oaks to red tones in mahogany, and honey-coloured walnut. All of which adds an interesting texture and can really refresh a space.

Like flooring, parquetry can also be used on furniture from tables to kitchen worktops.

Let’s have a look at a few select items from the Out and Out flagship herringbone furniture collections, all of which are hand selected by our special design team.

Starting with the Parquet Console Table 116cm, this gorgeous table is made of MDF veneer solid oak wood and exudes timeless elegance, with tripod legs. Measuring only 40cm in depth, and 116cm in length, it would be a perfect console table for a narrow hallway or an entryway.

The incredibly versatile Denver Parquet Sideboard with hairpin legs is an expertly crafted parquet sideboard, available in three colours, black, white, and grey wash. A great addition to your dining space and another great size, as it’s not too big and it’s not too small.

Offering a fusion of traditional herringbone in a modern style, the 6 Seater 150cm Herringbone Dining Table & Astrid Dining Set includes the Out and Out rectangular herringbone dining table and 6 chairs. Available in two different lengths, 150cm and the slightly longer Herringbone Oak Dining Table - 180cm. It has a high-quality oak wood veneer and solid white oak legs. Ideal for socializing and classy contemporary dining. The grey resin Astrid chairs have a tulip shaped shell design with tapered wooden legs. Easy to wipe and clean, this really is the perfect dining set.

All these designs are versatile enough to suit any home, but also take into consideration the colour scheme. If you have lighter carpets and light wooden floors with a more contemporary style, go for the lighter veneered wood options.

The Parquet Console Table would fit in beautifully with a more traditional interior, as well in a monochrome contemporary minimal setting as a centrepiece. Parquet is such a classic and can get along with historical or retro styles.
