Cleaning & Care Instructions: Mattresses
Is there any regular maintenance I need to do for my mattress?
Although wear and tear is inevitable over time, you can prolong the life of your mattress by turning it regularly (every 3-6 months) to ensure even distribution of body weight. Make sure you have some extra pairs of hands for this, as mattresses can be pretty heavy!
You can also keep your mattress is good condition by changing and washing your bedding on a weekly basis. Use the time your sheets are in the wash to give your mattress and bed frame a gentle vacuum clean using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dead skin and dust. It’s also a good idea to let your mattress air for a little while before you put your bedding back on.
Is there a way of protecting my mattress?
The easiest way of protecting your mattress is by using a machine washable mattress protector. Covering your mattress with a mattress protector will prevent surface stains from settling deep into your mattress. Just be sure to let your mattress protector dry fully before putting it on your mattress, otherwise dampness or mould could form.
What if I spill something or stain my mattress?
If you spill something or stain your mattress, it is important to try and treat the affected area as soon as possible to prevent stains from settling too much.
A simple at-home solution for stain and spillage removal is to blot as much liquid as possible using a paper towel, before using a bucket of hot water with 1/4 cup of white vinegar for every litre. Grab a cloth and wet it in the water (but make sure you wring it out well to avoid soaking the mattress), scrub the stain using your cloth (or if it’s a particularly stubborn stain, you can scrub using an old toothbrush).
Afterwards, wring out your cloth in warm water and scrub the stain again to remove the soap suds. Repeat the process as many as times as necessary to remove the stain and finish by rubbing the area with a clean, dry towel to soak up any excess moisture. Then leave your mattress to air dry completely before putting your mattress protector back on.
