7 ways to make your room feel bigger

When it comes to interior design, detail is everything. A few styling hacks and curated tweaks here and there can really transform your overall living space, making it feel a whole lot bigger. A little furniture rearrangement and sometimes a good spring cleaning is all it takes. Here are 7 ways you can make your room feel bigger with minimal effort for big results.

First thing’s first, less is more: Keep the space free of unnecessary clutter and go for larger simpler pieces of furniture. Which may seem odd, but lots of smaller pieces will make the space feel more cramped.

Opt for an overall light colour scheme: Soft whites, creams and neutral tones will create an airy atmosphere and a Zen minimalist effect.

Let the light in

Use light, sheer fabrics on windows to allow the light in and make sure they hang all the way to the floor, using every inch of space. A handy trick is to fit the curtain rail as near as you can to the ceiling, giving the impression that the ceiling is higher than it is with longer curtain drops. Another idea is don’t use curtains at all, opt for blinds. Keep colours neutral to match the colour scheme from roller blinds to indoor wooden shutters. Ordinary glass windows can be changed to tempered opaque glass, either in full or in part on the bottom panes of sash windows. Providing enough natural light while also obscuring the view for privacy.

Throughout the house, the use of glass and window dressings that you can see through, will make your space seem larger.

Such as sheer voile net curtains, glass tables and cabinets, in combination with open shelving for full effect.

Use one choice of flooring throughout to create a sense of flow

Light wooden flooring and light rugs used across different rooms keeps space looking open while feeling connected. This effect can work too with dark painted floors, the key is continuity.

Keep things raised making use of wall space as the more floor you can see the larger the rooms will appear. Hide all your clutter in sideboards or neatly curate items on shelving units.

Style your home using slimline furniture

Use long, tapered legs, which feature a lot in our special contemporary furniture collections.

Use mirrors to create the illusion of space and bounce light off your walls

Mirrors are the first go to, to give the illusion of double the space, and there’s lots of different ways in which you can use them. Whether it’s on walls as furnishing fixture statement pieces from antique to modern mirrors. Or mirrored wardrobe and cupboards door panels, as well as mirrored tiles. The effects are quite dramatic, and it all looks fab.

Open house

Open plan living, literally removing walls and doors to create a larger living space, is a popular choice when refurbishing old houses, especially smaller terraced properties. From the ground floor lounge through to your kitchen and dining area extending to your garden. Creating a whole new dimension, flooding light in throughout from the front to the back of your home.

Oversized lighting

If you are hoping to make a smaller room appear larger, go for oversized lighting. It works wonders in a bedroom, living room, dining room or kitchen.

Glass tables are another great furniture idea to keep things looking clear and bright as well as less obtrusive. Ideal as dining, console or coffee tables, there’s a richness in how glass reflects that works in all interiors. See our Out and Out glass table collection for great style options.

Keep it simple

Remember the more objects you have the more space they take up, so try to keep things simple by simply displaying select items instead of clutter. And build your interior around the things you love best.
