7 living room accessories to lift the mood of your space

Create the right atmosphere at home by choosing interior accessories that complement your style and set the mood. Here are some essentials!

1. Lighting

Lighting has an immediate impact on a room, with your ceiling light taking centre stage. Use floor-standing lamps and table lamps to tone things down and alter the mood from bright to cosy. Warm-hued bulbs and dimmer switches go a long way to transform the entire perception.

Showcase your individual style by adding a vintage lamp or some low-hanging pendant lights, such as these fabulous Room 9 Pendant Lamps inspired by traditional French industrial shades. Made of ceramic, the exterior of the shade is a warm earthenware natural matt finish, with a contrasting high gloss, hand-glazed interior finish, available in white, blue or yellow. Hung with generous two-metre fabric cables in orange or silver, to complement mid-century, modern and retro interior design styles. See the latest fantastic Out and Out selection of exciting pendant lights available in different shapes and styles to suit, including natural bamboo.

Add candles for further effect and atmosphere on your mantelpiece or tables, which can also be seasonally decorated and used as centrepieces bringing an added glow.

2. Layer up with different textures and accents

Your living room is your own unique haven and should reflect your personality. Add soft furnishings to give it character with different textures and colours using curtains, cushions, rugs and throws to add warmth and comfort.

Add to the collection over time and curate unique items that you can switch and mix and match, from season to season for a refresh.

3. Liven things up with houseplants

Displaying a tall plant or a selection of plants on shelves, as well as adding cut flowers to vases, gives a room a splash of texture and colour. Not to mention, improves air quality, and brings a calming energy that we share with outside nature, indoors.

4. Coffee table

Set the tone for your living room with an essential coffee table. This Marrakesh Round Coffee Table is perfect for smaller apartments, available in large and small sizes. Made from mango, a sustainable hardwood, stood upon a solid iron frame. We love the open structure of this sturdy table which cleverly gives the illusion of more space.

A versatile design piece at either end of your sofa or paired at both ends, as well as in front of it. And great in opposing sizes together in a room to display books and lamps or ornaments.

5. Sideboards

All living rooms should have a sideboard, and this classic mid-century inspired piece is a great solution for storage which will upgrade your room in an instant.

This Seattle Large Modern Sideboard, measuring 135cm in length, is the ideal living room accessory. Available in Oak, Black or White.

Here you see it styled and looking fabulous, by @atthegallaghers, in a contemporary setting against a white wall and industrial black radiator, with parquet wood flooring, and a black window frame leading onto the garden. We love the simple, clean line, less is more aspect, which is the impact the sideboard has as a statement piece within the room. This organised space also looks luxurious.

6. Hang art

The 2023-24 year ahead trend for hanging art is to be Maximalist and daring, with bright colours, displaying the things you love unashamedly.

From pictures to wall hangings and souvenirs. Create a wonderful collage around you of memories, and share them as conversation pieces among friends. Relish in the fun of being around the things you love, feeling at home, in your home, with things that make you smile.

7. The Sofa

White, cream and ivory sofa sales, went up by 50% in the autumn of last year, across the UK. Interesting, as it shows that a neutral-coloured settee is a very popular choice.

Great also in a larger space alongside another fabric sofa, to add a neutral contrasting layer and interest.

Dramatic and daring, as well as luxurious, the Lazy Turquoise Velvet Corner Sofa is seen here styled by @newroad_newproject against a moody, dark wall.

Turquoise works well against every other colour in the spectrum. Stunning against rich, deeper colours or patterned wallpapers. Just looking at this makes us feel relaxed, it’s such a stand-out piece, that the rest of the room can work around it.

Or go for a classic, retro style Stark Black Velvet Armchair, against a cool, contemporary graphic wallpaper and bold print, as seen styled by @samgoldstyle
