How to use the right textures in your home

One of the easiest ways to add interest to a room is by using layers of texture. They can be scaled up or down, soft or heavy, using a mixture of textiles, and everything from rugs to throws, pillows or blankets, bedding and cushions. Fabrics such as leather, velvet, silk, wool, cotton and linen, can all look really great be it a cosy or glamorous look you want to create.

Here are some great ideas and options to add some texture to your home.

Upholstered furniture

Adding upholstered furniture to your home not only serves as a decorative feature, but also adds comfort and luxury as well as elegance.

Faux leather

Fab for high-traffic areas, faux leather is easily wipeable, so great for families with children. We love this Erika - Faux Leather Chair with Black Legs, which comes as a set of two. It has a fabulous vintage look, and distressed finish, and is quilted, so extra comfy. Available in cream or vintage brown leather, with an option of two different legs, wood effect or black, to fit the texture you desire in your home, whether it be traditional or industrial.

For a small office or dining area, the Felicia High Gloss Round Dining Set with four white faux leather chairs creates an immediate impact. A good combination of chrome legs, high gloss surfaces, and artificial leather upholstery with white stitching.

Knitted fabrics

Knitted fabrics provide warmth and comfort, ideal for armchairs and sofas, such as this textured Dark Grey Olivia Armchair, or three-seater Stark Sofa. Available in over 10 different fabrics and colour options specially selected by our upholstery specialists for your indoor furniture. Create the colour palette you want, from soft knitted beige, light and dark grey, to pastel green. The slow compression cushions are made with premium-grade pocket springs alongside a multi-density foam, which means they feel as good as they look.

Velvet Galore

Velvet is great for a single statement chair e.g. swivel office chairs or a stool, in a home office, living or dining room. This super comfy velvet Piper Swivel Chair with sleek tripod legs will add texture and sophisticated layers to your home and is available in light pink or grey.

Use natural textures

Experiment with different textures. Natural fibres, such as linen curtains, wicker baskets and rattan lamps add subtle textures and are interesting on the eye as well as pleasant to touch.

Add architectural features

Adding architectural features such as panel moulding or coffering is one of the easiest ways to add texture and dimension to a space.

Layers of interest: Art, sculpture and accessories

Add layers of patterns and build on graphics and prints. Art and rugs are great for this. Texture can be in the form of neutrals or lots of colour sitting by side. Imperfect, irregular, weathered surfaces add another layer of interest. Flowers, lighting, and combining different height houseplants, also add another element of shape and texture
